Thiruvathirakali

Thiruvathirakali is a unique dance performed in Kerala, India, on the auspicious day of Thiruvathira. The sinuous movements executed by the dancers around a nilavilakku (oil lamp) embody lasya or the charm and grace of the feminine. The dance follows a circular, pirouetting pattern accompanied by clapping hands and singing. Today, Thiruvathirakali has become a popular dance form for all seasons.

MAUK Thiruvathira Project

MAUK’s Thiruvathira Project aims to promote Kerala culture to our global community. Just like Bhangra, Garba, the Cèilidh, and other communal dances, Thiruvathira aims to bring us all together, no matter our experience or ability.

With its gentle pace and repetitive movements, Thiruvathira is a dance form that welcomes you to join in. By dancing together, though virtually, for now, you will undoubtedly experience benefits to your wellbeing. And, with varying levels to our classes, you will find something that works for you.

Classes for Thiruvathira

MAUK has been running regular thiruvathira classes virtually since January 2022 and it is one of few organisations in the UK to do so. We aim to make classes friendly to people of any age and ability. Our youngest participant is six years and our oldest is above eighty. The class is taught by a professional Indian classical dancer.
